On Thursday 5 June, Audrey Keown Theatre was transformed into a vibrant celebration of rhythm, movement and musical excellence as students took to the stage for the school’s Annual Music Festival. Designed to spotlight the energy and creativity of young performers, this year’s theme— Music and Movement —was brought to life through a captivating array of performances that demonstrated just how powerfully music can move both body and soul.

From the moment guests stepped into the foyer, they were greeted by the swinging sounds of the Stage Band , instantly setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. What followed was a diverse and imaginative showcase of musical works inspired by dance, rhythm and motion, reaffirming the school's reputation for nurturing well-rounded, confident performers.

Audience members were taken on a journey through a range of classical and contemporary dance forms. Highlights included the Senior Bells performing a stately Pavanne , a beautiful rendition of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Madrigal , and a spirited performance of Libertango by Chamber Strings . The Wind Ensemble brought drama and flair with Tarantula , a piece based on the lively Tarantella dance, once thought to cure a tarantula's bite through frenzied motion.

Other ensembles explored the broader theme of movement. Chamber Choir sang We're Walking in the City , and the Pipe Band led a rhythmic march through traditional melodies. The PLC Symphony Orchestra performed Les Toreadors , while the Senior Chamber Orchestra delivered a moving performance of Romeo and Juliet , reminding the audience of music's storytelling power.

Of course, not all movement was formal—many pieces had the audience dancing in their seats. Vocal Synergy's Joyful Joyful brought pure energy, the Senior Concert Band’s rendition of Soul Bossa Nova added a dash of swing and flair, and the Big Band closed out the evening with a toe-tapping performance of I Wanna Be Like You . A standout moment came from Music Captain and MC Emma Zhang , who captivated the audience by mimicking the motion and drama of an approaching storm—a powerful reminder of the creativity that thrives in PLC Sydney's music program.

Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone passionate about the arts, PLC Sydney's Music Festival offers a compelling insight into the kind of dynamic, well-rounded education that prepares students not only for academic success but for life beyond the classroom. It's more than a concert—it's a celebration of confidence, collaboration and creativity in motion.
