Paper 1: Texts and Human Experiences

This intensive workshop is designed as a mock HSC English examination for the Common Module, Texts and Human Experiences, with a specific focus on Paper 1, Section 1: Unseen Texts and Comprehension.

Often regarded as one of the most challenging components of the HSC English examination, Section 1 requires students to demonstrate sophisticated analytical and interpretative skills when responding to unfamiliar texts, rather than relying primarily on prepared content knowledge.

The workshop will begin with a focused review of the Common Module rubric and a targeted warm-up activity to reinforce the key skills required for effective textual analysis. Students will then complete a traditional HSC-style Section 1 examination under timed conditions, including designated reading time, to practise analysing unseen texts and constructing precise responses within examination constraints.

Following the examination, the teacher will conduct a detailed marking and consolidation session, working through each question and explaining the reasoning, textual evidence and analytical depth required to achieve full marks. Students will examine what constitutes a high-quality response in relation to the specific questions and texts presented in the examination.

Each question will be reviewed collaboratively, allowing time to discuss the unseen texts, compare student responses, and clarify how responses can be strengthened. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of HSC marking expectations, greater confidence in approaching unfamiliar texts, and practical strategies for producing perceptive, well-structured and precise responses under examination conditions.
