Holiday Program for Gifted Students – Years 7 & 8

Two workshops will be run over two days:

Day 1 Workshop: Order in the Court - Unlocking the Mysteries of Law and Justice

In this engaging holiday workshop, our learners will explore how the law holds society together by studying famous legal cases, groundbreaking verdicts, and the unlikely champions of justice. Through a vast array of case studies (from the mystery of a snail in a bottle to who-knows-what-else!) and lively discussions and debates, our learners will uncover the inner workings of the legal system, investigate landmark decisions, and discover the fascinating, time-honoured traditions of court etiquette and formality. By stepping into the shoes of judges and lawyers, our learners will discover the power of their own voices and leave the workshop inspired to see themselves as the next generation of sharp-minded legal thinkers and defenders of justice.

Day 2 Workshop: AI Detectives - Real, Fake and How to Outsmart the Machine

Can you distinguish a real photograph from an AI-generated image, or recognise when artificial intelligence presents incorrect information with confidence? In this engaging, investigative workshop, students become AI detectives, exploring how artificial intelligence works, where its limitations lie and how to evaluate its outputs critically.

Students will investigate how generative AI creates text and images and why it can generate inaccurate or fabricated information. They will examine and debate the ethical implications of artificial intelligence through a collaborative team challenge, and develop their own code of conduct for the responsible use of AI.

Along the way, students will strengthen essential skills in critical thinking, media literacy, and the responsible evaluation and use of artificial intelligence, while developing a more informed approach to questioning the accuracy, reliability, and potential bias of AI-generated content.

An engaging and thought-provoking holiday workshop for students who are ready to move beyond simply using AI to develop a deeper understanding of how it works, where it can fail and how to engage with it critically and responsibly.
