Holiday Program for Gifted and High Potential Students – Years 7 & 8

Two workshops will be run over two days:

  • Day 1 Workshop: Future Innovators: Robotics in ActionAutonomous Systems & Engineering – Tuesday 20 January 2026
  • Day 2 Workshop: The Evolution of Comedy and Tragedy – Wednesday 21 January 2026

Day 1 Workshop: Future Innovators: Robotics in Action – Autonomous Systems & Engineering

Step into advanced robotics in this hands-on, engineering-focused workshop designed for students ready to build intelligent machines. Using Edison robots, students will move far beyond basic behaviours as they learn to design, code and refine autonomous robotic systems capable of sensing, navigating and responding to their environment.

Students will:

  • Master Robotics Programming – use EdScratch and EdPy/Python to build programs that combine loops, logic, variables, and sensor-driven decision making.
  • Explore Autonomous Engineering – work with motors, light sensors, line detection and obstacle sensing to create robots that can navigate complex challenges independently.
  • Solve Real Robotics Problems – design strategies, test performance, debug issues and optimise robot behaviour like real engineers.
  • Develop Teamwork & Technical Thinking – collaborate to build stable, reliable and purposeful robotic systems.

Activities may include Autonomous Maze Runs, Line-Tracking Competitions, Precision Navigation Challenges, Obstacle Response Tasks, and Robot Engineering Sprints — each designed to blend creativity, robotics, and practical problem-solving.

This program brings together coding and robotics in a meaningful, engineering-driven way, giving students the foundations they need to transition into any programming language while building confidence in real-world autonomous systems.

Day 2 Workshop: The Evolution of Comedy and Tragedy: From Aristotle to Today

Unlock the timeless power of storytelling with this immersive workshop. Dive deep into how the classic genres of Comedy and Tragedy—revered since Aristotle and reimagined by Shakespeare—have shaped not only our stories but the very fabric of society. You’ll explore the roots and relevance of these foundational genres, from classic Tragedy to modern-day Crime, Romance, Melodrama, and Soap Opera.

Discover what Comedy and Tragedy reveal about the human experience. Learn to wield this insight to captivate audiences, bring characters to life, and deepen your own voice as a writer. This multimodal workshop will focus on using this knowledge in creative and academic writing.
